Babe Ruth Retires No. 3
My wife and I have signed up with Open Adoption and Family Services. We’re eagerly anticipating adopting a child.

So, about eagerly: I’m 42 years old. I find myself trying to judge the age of other fathers I see. I find many older fathers out there, but I want to start this part of my life as soon as I can. I’m ready, even though I know I can never be fully prepared for the challenge, frustration, beauty, love or heartache of parenthood, still, I’m ready for it.

Now, anticipating: this is the really hard part. Every expectant father I’ve ever known has had an ETA for their baby. We don’t. We’re essentially on call. We’re gathering equipment, taking classes, reading books…and waiting. We call it the ‘psychic pregnancy of indeterminate duration.’

It’s hard knowing your life is going to change but not knowing when.
