This morning we were summed to watch a videotaped speaking engagement by Jim Collins, who is somewhat of a motivational speaker for the corporate world. I was pretty skeptical going into it, but he was a good speaker, and a lot of what he said has personal relevance. One of his main points was related to the parable of the fox and the hedgehog. The fox is crafty and does a lot of things well, but he’s no match against a hedgehog, who excells at one simple thing: rolling up into a ball and defending himself. He went on to explain the hedgehog principal as the union set of three things: Doing something you have a genuine passion for, doing something that you have a genetic predisposition to be the best at, and having the right economic denominator—a simplified plan for turning that something into money. He said that by keeping those three things in line and pushing at the “flywheel” of this principal, you’ll eventually gain a lot of momentum and growth in your field.
It was clear to me that Wendy is on the right path. She’s passionate about animation, she’s naturally a great teacher, and all the different things she does—from teaching workshops to freelance writing to consulting—is geared around her teaching animation to different audiences. But I still don’t really know where my passion lies.
